For adults in Barbados who have always wanted to play
3 reasons why you can never learn how to play steelpan as an adult in Barbados
You can learn as an adult. Here are three things that can make getting started feel harder than it should, and what to look for when you choose where to learn.
See the three obstacles ↓You cannot find a place to start
You look for somewhere to learn, but the options you find seem aimed at children or people who already know how to play. It’s easy to conclude that you missed your chance at school.
Before you give up, ask a more useful question: does this place welcome adults who are starting from the beginning?
What to look for: A clear starting point, an explanation of what beginners will practise and space to ask basic questions.
Ask this:
“I’m an adult beginner. What would my first session look like?”
You are trying to keep up before the basics feel comfortable
Learning a piece for a performance and working on your technique can place different demands on your practice time. If everything feels rushed, you may keep repeating the same mistake without understanding how to fix it.
Ask how the teaching will help you work on the basics at a manageable pace, and how you’ll know what to practise between sessions.
What to look for: Clear guidance, focused exercises and feedback you can put into practice.
Ask this:
“If I get stuck, how will you help me work through it?”
You cannot see where your practice is taking you
Maybe you want to play a song you love, play with other people or eventually perform. If your lessons never connect to that goal, it can be hard to keep making time for them.
Tell your teacher what you want to be able to do. Start with a realistic first goal and ask what progress towards it might look like.
What to look for: A learning path that connects your practice to your own reasons for playing.
Ask this:
“How can we work towards the kind of playing I want to do?”
What has been stopping you?
Choose the one that feels closest:
- I have not found somewhere that welcomes adult beginners
- I am worried that I will struggle to keep up
- I want to play, but I do not have a clear goal or routine yet
